After graduating from FTII in 1996 with a specialization in Film Editing Niraj has been working mainly as a freelance editor and has edited more than a dozen feature films in different languages, the most notable of which are SHWAAS, which won the National Award for Best Feature Film, 2004, and was India's official entry for the Oscars, VALOO, VIHIR, DAHAVI F, NADI VAHATE, KSHITIJ, all in Marathi and have won critical acclaim and various awards including a few for Best Editing, K SERA SERA, a national award winning Konkani film; DHA, a Gujarati film which just won the National Award for Best Gujarati Feature, 2018 and AURANGZEB, produced by Yash Raj Films. He has also edited over thirty documentaries and an equal number of short fiction films, including KALIGHAT FETISH, which was adjudged as Best Documentary 2001, Tampere Film Festival, Finland.

Niraj has been involved in film academics for about a decade and a half and has been a part of the regular Visiting Faculty at Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai, Digital Academy, Mumbai, Whistling Woods International, Mumbai, NID, Ahmedabad.
